The Pakistani military announced that its forces had killed "15-20 Taliban fighters" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak border district. A Afghan authorities representative said that 12 non-combatants had been killed and more than 100 injured by Pakistani firing. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. Not one of the alleged fatalities could be verified by third parties. Hostilities between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital blamed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny claims that it is sheltering armed groups targeting Pakistan. Social Media and Armed Confrontations The opposing forces are not only battling for the advantage on the border, but also on digital platforms, attempting to persuade the general population that their side is causing greater losses. The latest fighting come after intense cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban asserted to have eliminated 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "Taliban and affiliated insurgents". The claimed death tolls announced by each side could not be confirmed by external sources. A few days of fragile peace that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning. On-the-Ground Accounts and Impact Footage allegedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including images said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These videos have not been authenticated. A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that clashes broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, reported that "intense hostilities continued for almost several hours". "I see drones and fighter planes flying over us, some of our family members are wounded," they added. A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "7 bodies and 36 wounded transported to the hospital", including males, females and minors. The circumstances were "tense" and additional casualties were being transferred to medical care, he noted. Displacement and Global Responses A local authority figure in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of households have been displaced since last night due to the heavy clashes". He said they were on "maximum readiness" after a several military positions were attacked by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of 2 Pakistani military members. In a distinct night-time engagement on the north-western border, the Pakistani military said that 25 to 30 Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated. The hostilities have prompted calls for de-escalation from other countries including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to broker a ceasefire. On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the clashes. "I urge all parties to practice maximum restraint, protect non-combatants, and follow global regulations," he wrote. Historical Tensions Pakistan has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to operate from their land and fight against the Islamabad government in an attempt to impose a strict Islamic-led system of rule. The Afghan Taliban government has consistently denied these allegations.
