'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': British duo finish extraordinary voyage in Down Under after rowing across Pacific Ocean

One last sunrise to sunset. One more day up and down the pitiless slide. One more day of blistered hands clutching relentless paddles.

However following over 15,000 kilometers on the water – a monumental half-year voyage across the Pacific that included intimate meetings with marine giants, failing beacons and chocolate shortages – the ocean presented a final test.

Strong 20-knot breezes near Cairns continuously drove their compact craft, their boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now achingly close.

Loved ones gathered on land as a scheduled lunchtime finish shifted to 2pm, followed by 4pm, then twilight hours. Finally, at 6.42pm, they came alongside Cairns Yacht Club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe stated, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We ended up outside the channel and thought we might have to swim to shore. To ultimately arrive, after extensive preparation, just feels incredible."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The UK duo – aged 28 and 25 respectively – set out from Peruvian shores on 5 May (a first try in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

Across nearly half a year on water, they averaged 50 nautical miles a day, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her crewmate slept a bare handful of hours in a confined sleeping area.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a saltwater conversion device and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the women counted on a less-than-reliable solar system for limited energy demands.

For much of their journey over the enormous Pacific, they lacked directional instruments or signaling devices, making them essentially invisible, nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, navigated shipping lanes and endured raging storms that, periodically, silenced all of their electronics.

Historic Accomplishment

And they've kept rowing, one stroke after another, during intensely warm periods, under star-filled night skies.

They have set a new record as the pioneering women's team to paddle over the South Pacific, continuously and independently.

And they have raised in excess of ÂŁ86k (A$179,000) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Life Aboard

The women attempted to stay connected with society away from their compact craft.

Around day one-forty, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – down to their last two bars with still more than 1,600km to go – but allowed themselves the indulgence of opening one bar to celebrate England's Red Roses victory in the World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 in a record time.

She now has a second ocean conquered. However there were instances, she admitted, when they doubted their success. Beginning on the sixth day, a path over the planet's biggest sea appeared insurmountable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the freshwater system lines broke, however following multiple fixes, we accomplished a workaround and barely maintained progress with little power throughout the remaining journey. Each time problems occurred, we just looked at each other and went, 'typically it occurred!' But we kept going."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. The remarkable aspect was our collaborative effort, we resolved issues as a team, and we were always working towards the same goals," she remarked.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she rowed the Atlantic, walked the southwestern English coastline, ascended Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. Further adventures likely await.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're enthusiastically preparing additional journeys collectively once more. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
